We’re pleased to introduce Quratulann Farooqi, who goes by Cori. Cori joined the Alcorn Immigration Law team a few months ago as an associate attorney in our family immigration team.
“I feel deeply rewarded when I help people navigate the complicated U.S. immigration system,” says Cori. “I’m honored to be a part of their journey to come to the U.S. and find a place that feels like home.”
Previously, Cori worked as an immigration attorney at a nonprofit offering immigration legal services. There, she prepared petitions for U nonimmigrant status, family-based petitions, VAWA self-petitions, adjustment of status, permanent residence renewal, naturalization, employment authorization, DACA, and responses to Request for Evidence (RFE) from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) among other things.
Cori attended Santa Clara University School of Law. But the law wasn’t always her intended profession.
Cori earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Initially, she thought she would become a therapist. But taking classes to earn a minor in legal studies shifted her career path. “I found the law interesting and complex,” she says.
Her psychology background and time volunteering at a women’s center helped her develop culturally sensitive and effective communication skills. “I can make clients feel at ease, which allows them to feel comfortable sharing personal information with me.” That skill was particularly important when she worked on immigration cases for survivors of trauma at the legal nonprofit.
More About Cori
Immigration law was “a natural fit for me,” says Cori, who comes from a diverse family of immigrants. Her father immigrated to the U.S. from Pakistan to attend university. Her uncle immigrated from Indonesia. And her husband’s family immigrated from Mexico.
While attending law school, she worked as a student advocate at the Katherine and George Alexander Community Law Center in San Jose, helping prepare naturalization applications and assist with consultations. She also received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for top student in a law class. Cori won the award in her family law class.
