It’s time to end family detention. Keeping mothers, babies, children, and pregnant women locked in cold, harsh detention facilities after suffering the trauma and fleeing persecution is an abomination. Family detention takes an enormous toll on the families who came here fleeing the violence and deteriorating economic and social conditions in some Latin American countries. It worsens their psychological health by increasing isolation, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Americans should be able to be proud that we welcome poor and vulnerable people, but this is a shameful situation.
